The establishments are regularly controlled by the competent Inspection Services of the (Walloon, Brussels or Flemish) Region and of the FPS Employment, Work and Social Consultation.
For all the establishments within the scope of the Seveso II Directive, an inspection program must be drawn up and finalized so as to allow for a planned and systematic survey in each establishment.
- The inspections are planned in time in a well-thought-out way. It is impossible to be present everywhere simultaneously. It is not possible either to thoroughly examine, during one inspection, all the prevention systems in the establishment.
- The systematic inspection methods which are adapted to detect possible defaults are applied. The potential risks of major industrial accidents lie in the (chemical and toxic) nature of the dangerous substances which are often present in a complex work environment. Most of the time, the risks cannot be perceived visually during a simple inspection tour, as they require special inspection techniques.
